Question...

What would you do?

If your insurance covered 3 ART attempts (IVF or FET), and would allow a fresh cycle AND a FET (if the fresh doesn't work) to count as just ONE of those three in the event you elect to do a single embryo transfer, would you do it??

At our clinic the success rates for my age group are:

2 fresh embryos transferred- 80% chance of pregnancy- 65% chance of live birth, 50% of those births are twins.

With a single embryo transfer our success rates would go down by about 10%.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?!?!?

For me, this is a tough one and since my insurance covers nothing, one I don't have to 'worry' about. If it were me, I would consider whether or not I would want to keep going through the meds (up to 6 times) if it didn't work the first time with just 1 egg. I would also have to really consider my odds....80% chance is good as is 65% to take home a baby. While 10% less than that doesn't seem like it would be a huge difference - a 55% chance of taking home a baby doesn't seem nearly as nice sounding as 65%. I am sure that you have considered all of this.
That being said, I think I would end up going for it with 2. You will still get two more attempts.

Although...if on the second attempt you decided to only transfer 1 would they count that as 1 along with the next? does that make sense? If that is the case, then you could still have up to 4 attempts left after that first attempt with 2. Also, if you transfer 1 with the first fresh IVF could you do 2 on the FET and it still count as 1 attempt? probably not, but would be nice...

I am sure you have prayed about it - but that is definitely something I would do. Then, go with what you feel in your heart is right for you and your family!

To clarify... If we opt to do the single embryo transfer it would be a single embryo in both the fresh and frozen cycle. Also, it is only offered in your first IVF cycle, or after a successful pregnancy.

I think then, that I would go for 2. I like the 65% odds better than 55%. But, that is just me.

I don't quite understand this. I haven't allowed my mind to go there with IVF, so I don't know much about it. And as obsessed and crazy I am about my IF, I still don't even know what ART means...LOL, I have yet to even google it!

However, I did just wanna say to pray about it...when you pray about it, you'll receive a peace about your decision ;) AND, girl, you are sooo lucky your insurance covers any IF...that's awesome!! GOOD LUCK!!

No insurance coverage here either but since you've asked for opinions... I would go with two. I would do it based on statistics and knowing you were using two embryos from a fresh cycle whereas there's more unknown about what could happen during the thawing process. I had two good looking embryos on the day of transfer (none to freeze) and the RE gave me the option of using one and freezing one. We opted for transferring both and I'm pregnant with a singleton. All that said, you have to do what you feel is right for your situation:] Wish you the best!
